10 Most Common Idioms

1.      Actions speak louder than words.
Meaning : People's intentions can be judged better by what they do than what they say.
Example : They always complain about the program. But, they do nothing to fix the problem. They should know that actions speak louder than words.

2.      Burn the midnight oil.
Meaning : Working late into the night, alluding to the time before electric lighting.
Example : My father and mother work very hard. They often burn the midnight oil to get much money

3.      Caught between two stools.
Meaning : When someone finds it difficult to choose between two alternatives.
Example : I am caught between two stools. I do not know whether it is better to continue my study abroad or stay with my family.

4.      Don’t judge a book by its cover.
Meaning : Don’t judge something primarily on appearance.
Example : What you see does not always determine the real reality. So, be wise! Don’t judge a book by its cover!

5.      Every cloud has a silver lining.
Meaning : Keep being optimistic, the difficult times will lead to better days.
Example : You should believe that you can fix all the problems. You should remember that every cloud has a silver lining.

6.      Hit the nail on the head.
Meaning : Do or say something exactly right
Example : Perfect! He hits the nail on the head.

7.      Kill two birds with one stone.
Meaning : Accomplishing two different things at the same time.
Example : He is absolutely lucky. He kills two birds with one stone.

8.      Once in a blue moon.
Meaning : Something that happens very rarely.
Example : It’s once in a blue moon. Very rare to happen.

9.      Taste of your own medicine.
Meaning : Something happens to you, or is done to you, that you have done to someone else
Example : Finally, she gets the taste of her own medicine.

10.  Last straw.
Meaning : The final/last problem in a sequences of problems.

Example : They were happy. Finally, they fixed the last straw.
